how to become more articulate

To many of us in the corporate world or otherwise, being able to conduct a decent and interesting speech or conversation is necessary. Especially in the presence of your peers or at a meeting, or at a conference, or even when you are networking with people to maintain strategic alliances. Not all of us are as articulate as we would like to be since it's hard to catch the interest of everyone in the room unless you know them personally and are able to identify what would be of interest. However, being able to conduct a clear and well-presented conversation or speech is key. Here are a few tips for you, in order to improve yourself to advance to a better version of yourself in this segment.

1. An important way to improve yourself is to listen to yourself while speaking. While it is at times terrifying to hear ourselves, it is the perfect way to find out where the areas that need to be tweaked are. Recording you and listening to yourself delivering a speech is one way you can clearly identify with yourself on what changes you need, since you listen to yourself in the judgement of yourself, expecting it to be up to the standard you have given yourself.

2. Monitoring your speed is an important way to identify if you are giving a clear and well thought of the speech. According to Author Carol A. Fleming, the ideal speed per minute should be 155 to 175 words per minute. The way you can review this is to once again record yourself reading a paragraph consisting of around 60 words, in the normal speed with which you would perform. Once you identify your speed limits, you can practice going faster or slowing down.

3. Make sure you don't use words that are fillers, such as "um" "uh" "like" etc. when you add these words to a speech, it immediately takes it down a notch into an amateur level instead of a professional level, since you sound like you're not prepared or that you're talking on a subject you have not mastered. Also, it's unpleasant for the audience to hear and can cause a level of annoyance, which would mean that they would lose interest quickly.

4. Making sure to enunciate each word is very important, even if it has to be exaggerated. Make sure each sentence is properly projected up to the last word, and at no point should you trail off on any sentences.

5. Watching Ted Talks, and other famous people speak will give you tips on facial expressions, hand gestures, sound balancing, pronunciation, and posture. It will also give you tips on how to compose your speech, as in how it should be structured.
